You could easily do the exact same thing in Photoshop. You just have to know how to properly use the pen tool on Photoshop, since its a bit more complicated to use in Photoshop than it is in Illustrator. Also, Illustrator's different layers (or whatever) are objects, not shapes, like they are in Photoshop.

Illustrator is meant for that kind of stuff, so its always easier. Photoshop you have to do extra keystrokes to do certain tasks with the pen tool. Like when you want to make a curved line, straight.
OMGITSTAW used only Photoshop. In all of my stuff I used a combination of Illustrator (for building the design) and Photoshop (for textures and other stuff). If you wanna shade I suggest using Photoshop (and a transparent background). Use a gradient paint brush (not the gradient tool), draw your shade onto the transparent background. Save it, and use Adobe Bridge to move the shade into Illustrator as an object so you can drag it and move it around like any other object you have built in Illustrator. It's kind of really hard to explain without demonstrating it, but it's not complicated a tall.
You could always take the more complicated way, though, and build everything in Photoshop, but I prefer not to do that.
